The newly retired owners of this 30-year-old, never-renovated home were looking for Ernst to create a fresh living environment that functions beautifully and allows them to cook together and entertain. The design challenges Ernst Brothers overcame to bring this renovation to life included the confines of 8-foot ceilings, soffits and a dropped beam and small door opening between kitchen and family room.
The homeowners had an exacting list of project requirements:
- Create a highly functional chef’s kitchen with an inviting entertainment space
- Connect the family room and kitchen for unobstructed flow
- Introduce as much natural light as possible
- Make the space feel larger without increasing the footprint
The design team fulfilled the owners’ demands by replacing the boxed bay window with an oversized arched window, making the ceilings appear higher while flooding the room with natural light. All soffits were removed, a flush-mounted beam replaced the dropped beam and the wall separating the kitchen and living area became a half wall topped with a woodwork cap and apron detail.
